1. It is easy to learn

Learning a foreign language is not that easy; you have to relearn the basics of conjugation, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation… However, English is considered a relatively simple language to learn because it uses much easier grammar rules than other European languages.  Indeed, there are only two genders and only one definite and indefinite article. So it is simple to have a basic knowledge of this language. Only pronunciation and vocabulary can be complicated to acquire.

2. It is a global language

Although English is not the most widely spoken first language in the world (Mandarin is still the language with the most speakers), it is by far the most widely used because it is spoken in more countries than any other language. More than 60 countries have English as their official language: among them are the Commonwealth countries. Moreover, in many countries, English is the second language commonly adopted by the inhabitants: this is notably the case in Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark… it is also the official language of diplomacy. English is also the most widely taught modern language in schools. In total, more than 1 billion people are fluent in English and 1 billion learn it.

3. It helps you find a job

Finding a job is not always easy as many candidates apply for job offers. It’s important to know how to stand out from the competition in order to hope to get the job of your dreams. Speaking a second language helps to make an application more attractive, especially when it is a position of high responsibility, and therefore makes a person more employable by showing that they have spent time and energy learning a foreign language and are now able to express themselves fluently in English. It will therefore enable him/her to stand out from other candidates who will not have this added value on their CV. Indeed, employers are looking for someone who speaks English because it is the most used language in the world of work.

4. This is the first language used for business

English is the most widely used language in business. When a company has subsidiaries, suppliers, or offices abroad, it very often has to communicate in English. For example, when tendering for contracts, working with different teams, brands, attending meetings and going on business trips or business trips, it is essential to be able to communicate in English, as this is the only way to promote your business abroad.

5. You can easily travel everywhere

One of the most common anxieties when travelling in a foreign country is not being able to make oneself understood by the locals and thus not being able to communicate at will to request information. By mastering English, which is spoken in more than 60 countries, it becomes much easier to book a hotel, participate in activities and ask for directions. Indeed, hotel staff and those employed in railway stations or airports can speak English to give information to tourists and travellers. It is sad to restrict yourself to staying in your country when you want to go further but are afraid of the language barrier.

6. Learning English can help you meet new people

It is very common to come across people in your country or abroad who do not speak your language but who speak English. If you want to broaden your horizons by meeting and discussing with new people from all over the world, it is important to be able to understand them and be able to hold a discussion with them.

7. It is the language of media

If you wish to read or do further research on a particular topic, it is important to search in your own language and in English. Indeed, many articles, theses, and works are from English sources and have no equivalent in other languages. These works are often more extensive and therefore allow you to learn more about the subject of your study or work.  It is said that the Internet is an open door to the world and to information, and this is very true. It should immediately be pointed out that most of the information on the internet is written in English. It can be a user manual, a tutorial, a recipe … Knowing English is a real strength to take maximum advantage of Internet resources.

8. It gives you access to some of the most famous universities

Have you ever thought of studying at a foreign university? We’ve all heard of these internationally renowned universities such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford or Cambridge … But did you know that there are many other colleges and universities that also offer courses in English? In order to enter one of them, you will need to be fluent in English, as they are all English-speaking and will ask you to take an English test during the admission process to see if you have the level required to come and study there. The higher your level, the more possibilities you will have to choose your university. In addition, many university courses require you to write and deliver theses, articles, or dissertations that are written primarily in English.

9. It improves your memory

Another unexpected reason to learn English is that it is good for exercising your memory! Indeed, becoming bilingual (or just learning another language) helps to lessen the effects of old age on your brain. The brain is a muscle that needs to be trained so that it doesn’t lose power and function. So, by learning new words, reading or writing in another language, we stimulate and challenge certain parts of it.

10. For fun

Learning a language doesn’t have to be a tedious and boring task: it can be done in a fun way! Many people challenge themselves to learn a new skill, so why not learn another language just to feel happy and satisfied that they have managed to learn something new and useful!
